V8 disco into a tdi.
« on: February 06, 2011, 08:29:39 PM »
Hi everyone. I'm thinking of swapping the 3.9 v8 for either a 200 or 300 tdi. Anyone know how easy or hard this might be?. Also a list of parts I will need. I know about engine, radiator/intercooler. Filter
housing. What else might I need? Thanks guys.

Simpler - and probably cheaper - just to cash it in against a 300 Tdi ??
If its not broken you are not trying hard enough....

The problem I have is the disco I have is very solid. It's a really clean looking car too so if the swap is do able then I would rather keep it.

i would buy a complete but rotten disco for all the bits and buy the same era ie headlight shape so the wiring loom is similar/same that way the basic loom will fit and the different bits will probably plug in to the existing loom, as a 300 era will have alarms imobilisers to sort out

Id leave it TBH for one discos struggle to hold their value at the best of times i paid ?250 for a complete 300tdi disco and it aint the worst body i had seen by a long long way and decent chassis and good engine and gearbox. Once you get the work done and change it with DVLA from petrol to deisel the cost will be huge in comparison to defender. Personaly i would never buy a disco converted anyways and think most folk would be the same even if its is for better fuel econemy...id be to worried about why it got converted from a lush V8 into a bang wagon. Just a thought. Get a defender drop in a 300tdi ull make ur money all back a few years down the line. Its why im breaking my 90 petrol rather than converting it to much hassle with the DVLA.

Some really good points there. Some i hadn't even thought of yet. Thanks. I'll maybe give the LPG a bit more thought instead. Cheers everyone for the input.

Don't know what tank. You can fit it and get it certified, they are not all that complex.

If you can't afford the LPG conversion which you will get a return on your investment with, then why were you contemplating a TDi conversion which is surely more expensive? Alternatively buy a cheap and economical clunk-wagon van with an MOT and keep the glorious V8 as a runabout!  ;D

I just wanted the deisel in rather than LPG as I don't feel the LPG offers that good value for money. My last v8 had it and I didn't save money with it. If that makes sense. As for buying another car that's just more money to fork out for insurance ect. I'll keep it for now and maybe trade it for a td5 or something. Thanks
