Starting an old old engine....
« on: January 31, 2011, 10:14:55 PM »
We are making a start on the series 2A project. The first step is to strip it down but I thought we'd try turning the engine just for a look-see.

Well sadly it did not go well.... No turning motion with a long screwdriver through the starter pulley. No movement with a medium crow-bar....none with a humungeous great wrecking bar....

To ease the compression issues I tried to remove the plugs..... Again, no go, they seem welded in place. Bent a thin bar through the plug spanner.

I've dosed the plugs with easing oil and left it. Next step will be to try taking the head off.

Any thoughts on resurrecting an engine which has stood for over 10 years ? I'd like to re-use it if I can, I know the simplest option is probably just to junk it in favour of a known working replacement.
If its not broken you are not trying hard enough....

Soak plugs and everything else in WD40 and leave it for a week.

Ditto, and if that doesn't unseize it take the head off and get a block of wood and a big hammer. Give it a few whacks every day or so on the piston, keep the diesel topped up in the bores, you will see if it seeps away. Eventually it should work free!

also worth puting the transfer box in neutral, as the clutch is probably stuck to the flywheel locking the transmission, a quick run will free it when you get the engine going.

As said previously, take the head off then whack the 2 highest pistons, dont worry if you damage them as you will need to replace them after the rebore.
I would always rebuild an engine in preference to throwing in an unknown one.
youll need
Full engine gasket set  ?10.30
4 oversize pistons with rings and little end bearings  ?12.34 each
set of mains  ?4.43, big end  ?10.50, and thrusts  ?1.86 (get the crank measured to see if it needs grinding)
Oil pump  ?13.80
Timing chain, tensioner and giudes.  ?6.19
Check the cam and followers but they will be ok.
service kit (oil, plugs etc.)
even new engine mounts are only ?1.36
replace all the radiator hoses ??
Rebuild the head when the block n crank are away for machining
inlet valves  ?1.43
Exhaust valves  ?2.26
Valve guides  ?1.49

so for ?120 + vat and a few days work you will have a belter of an engine.

Hope this helps.

Drew.

Drew,

Thanks for that ! Given that part of this whole project is to teach my 14 yo mechanics then that may well be the way we go.
We'll have a shot at getting the head off this weekend, AGM attendence allowing !
