problem with halfshaft
« on: November 23, 2010, 08:12:22 PM »
Ok here goes thought i had broke a halfshaft as i lost drive.
after removing the hub carrier tried to remove shaft and it wont come out.
after alot of pulling the cv joint came off but left shaft in place.
Also noticed when pulling half shaft that when it moves a couple of mill outwards the prop started moving again push it back in and prop stops again. think the splines are striped off shaft, but cant get it out to check.

Anyone ever had this before. and whats the remedy is it new diff and shaft or will i get away with shaft only??

Any advice very greatfully recieved.

Bill

Don't know if it works with the Landrover, but on other motors I've seen it removed by taking the other shaft out and knock the jammed one through with a long drift

as long as it's a standard rover diff you can knock the broken bit out from the other side.  When the shafts go if they aren't removed straight away (and even some times when they are) they twist in the diff and take quite a bit of persuasion to come out.

If there is a half-shaft in place, the diff will NOT be coming out!!

Have you stripped off the swivel-ball? (I had a half-shaft wear, and catch on that..... )

With the dark nights i havent done much to it.

I am off tomorrow so hopefully will have some joy over the weekend.

Shaft doesnt seem to be broken, But doesnt spin diff till you try to pull it out, just a couple of millimeters and it spins diff but refuses to come out. push back 2 millimeters and it stops spinning diff. strange

had this with a comp motor, shaft is broken at splines, broken end is expanded out slightly preventing it coming out through diff end, clamp a puller on or weld a plate to the end to give something to pull on and then a large sliding hammer is needed to bang it out!

Been at this all day frozen and fed up. tried drifting from other side no joy.

Going to try welding lugs onto shaft and pull it out.

sorry to be a killjoy, but i had this scenario on the back axle and couldnt shift it by drifting, whacking, slidehammering, welding lug on end for sledgehammering, in the end i had to change the axle  >:( cheers-dan
