v8 rebuild
« on: May 04, 2014, 09:48:02 PM »
hi

i am just doing a wee bit of research, my rover 3.5 v8 is getting pretty worm/unreliable and was wondering if anyone need someone or a place that would be worth seeing about a rebuild?. Who knows how many miles it has done and it only cost me £100 like 10 years ago.  Do people think i would be better to buy a recon engine :o ?

I live in renfrewshire.

cheers alistair

Whats your budget?

Most rebuilders only sell you a bottom end and some heads depending on the spec. You still use the old timing cover and oil pump which in my book is half the job and its a get out clause for them to avoid warranty work.

I rebuilt my 3.9 myself and it cost a total of around £2000 but a large portion of that was due to having to get the bores oversized and so a full set of pistons.

I used these guys for the machine work http://engineservicesscotland.co.uk/

They were pretty friendly and quite quick with the work.

Hi

cool thanks for the reply. Did they do the full rebuild or did you just have the company do the machining and you built the engine ?

+1 for engine services, was recomended them from this forum. They lightened and balanced my V8 and reground the crank, top top quality job and were very reasonable on price

They just did the machine work for me.

In the first instance I stripped it all down and then had them check everything i.e. cylinder bore, cranshaft wear, heads for cracks and sealing of the valves. then had them rebore the cylinders, recut the valves, fit the new pistons to the conrods and clean the heads. did the rest of the assembly myself because in realitly if it's all going back standard it's fairly easy.

Should still have a spreadsheet somewhere that I had prices for must things on it if you want it.
