R380 manual gearbox repair
« on: May 25, 2011, 06:49:17 PM »
Hi

I've been informed that I have a worn layshaft bearing in the gearbox fitted to my Classic. I intend to attempt the repair myself, having the kind use of a friend's inspection pit. (And landrover knowledge!)

Any advice anyone can give me on how best to effect this repair would be most appreciated, also any essential specialist tools that are required.

I would intend replacing the clutch at the same time.

Many thanks

Richard

Hi Richard,

How do you know it is one of the layshaft bearings?

If it is, the one at the front is easiest to get at, if not then then one at the back (just before 5th gear) requires an almost full strip down.

you will probably need bearing splitters/pullers (or a grinder and chisel) to get the old ones off.
you will need something to press the new bearing on with (sometimes they can be "drifted" on, being careful not to stress the actual bearing races).

there is quite a lot to do,and some fiddly bits , but it is nothing too hard.

keep everything clean, don't let the springs and slippers from 4th gear syncro (the first one near the input shaft) boing out of place and get lost.

i would suggest you get a decent manual (or pdf manual) showing all the bits and where they go.
the transfer box and gearbox are quite heavy, you might want to get help of a crane to remove them.

if you are replacing the clutch, then you can use the gearbox input shaft (once you have stripped the gearbox cover off) as a clutch centering tool.
cheers

Stephen

Hi Stephen

Many thanks for your input. I took it to a Landrover specialist and he listened to the noise it was making and suggested that was the problem. I have downloaded the overhaul manual, and now thanks to your input I can arm myself with the tools I require.

Hi Richard,

if it is a rumbling sound it is most likely a bearing,
if it is a whining sound then it is most likely the input gear teeth and layshaft front gear teeth that are worn. (this sound disappears when in 4th).

i've found it quite satisfying to fix and recon my gearboxes (and cheap), especially ewhen all the parts are readily available.

it might be a good idea, if you are fully stripping the gearbox, to replace the syncro ring slippers and perhaps baulk rings as well. they tend to wear out making gear changes sticky or crunchy. BUT, if it is just bearing noise then you probably don't need to do anything else.

cheers

Stephen
