Where is the best place to buy new tyres?
« on: September 26, 2011, 06:27:50 PM »
Hi My wife's Disco3 requires a new set of tyres and I think I give the new General Grabber AT a try.
But has anyone got any suggestions as to the best/cheapest place to get them fitted?
the size is 255/60/18 and some where in the central belt would be a bonus.

Cheers
Graeme

You can always ask for a discount, see who shows here near you.

Have you tried Disco3.co.uk, one of the sponsors is AJS Tyres who will mail order them to you or he has recommended this place in Crieff

There is also the disco3club.co.uk, look for a man called Ken, he does tyres cheaper than anyone else I have ever come across.

Did you find a problem getting a fitter that will fit tyres you supply yourself,
& then how much per tyre/wheel to fit & balance?

I used a local guy the last time as I mail ordered my Pirelli Zeros but I need a proper 4 wheel alignment this time so I'm gonna use a guy in Edinburgh which i've heard is very good. I haven't had them fitted yet because I'm getting my tie rods & lower ball joints done first.

I think most garages would be glad of the business nowadays to be honest.

I bought mine at  Camskill and had them swapped onto four rims and fitted by RJ Strang for 40 quid. They have depots in Broxburn and Hamilton.

Hi Thanks for all the replies, keep them comming.

George I've sent them a e-mail for prices.

Davet will call them tomorrow

StephenO I've looked at Camskill but by the time I get them fitted they are about the same or more than Blackcircles.

The 2 local tyre places that I used to use for fitting/swapping tyres now want ?15+vat and ?20+vat to fit and balance 1 tyre :o
They used to just take ?20 or so for the tea kitty!

From George's link I got the contact details for Linlithgow Tyre&Exhausts who gave me the best price ?576 all in fitted. He says he is the main importer and supplier for General Tyres and won't be beaten on price. And since he is the distributer for them he always has a good stock. Blackcircles was the next cheapest at ?624 I gave them a call but could not even match the price I got.

So tomorrow morning I'm getting 4 new General Grabber AT's fitted.

Will give them a try out at the green road run on Sunday.

Thanks for everyones suggestions
Cheers
Graeme

Last set of tyres I had were swapped from Wolf rims to Alloys by my local Kwikfit - no hassle at all. The local ATS have said before that they cannot balance LR wheels because they do not have the kit to centre them - but another branch in town were fine about it.
If its not broken you are not trying hard enough....

No should be ok as the current tyres are wearing evenly.
Getting them fitted tomorrow morning at 10, so will let you all know how I get on.

Hi all Just thought I would report back now I have my tyres fitted by Linlithgow Tyre&Exhaust ???.

Got the tyres at a very good price but the service was terrible. They damaged one of my alloys with a big score down to shiney metal on the rim along with a couple of good big chunks of the silver paint off.
When I tried to show them the damage they would not even look at it! Just kept saying that they were old marks and that their machines could not damage wheels.
When the manager eventually looked at it he say's it's an old mark, Then the tyre fitter says all the wheels were ok when he fitted the tyres it must have happened on the way home, then another fitter appeared and says that the fitter that fitted the tyres pointed it out to him before he removed the old tyre. >:(
So out of the 3 employees I got 3 different stories.
But no offer to repair damage ???

I know it is new damage because the exposed metal is still shiney and I washed the wheels last night before I put the car away.
So all in all I would advise to give them a miss.
