advice on comp safari/hill rallies
« on: November 11, 2014, 08:59:25 AM »
Thinking (again) of going from stage rallying to comp safaris and hill rallies and am looking for advice/ideas/information.  How many events of this sort are in Scotland/North of England.  What sort of vehicle should I be starting with , full independent offroad racer , live axles , 88" or 100" , engine back , engine in front ?? What ?

I am assuming 100" is better and more stable for fast stuff and 88" better for trials type sections. Should I start off with axles or go for indepdendant ?

See various specs for sale at various prices . Dont want to spend too much initially incase I dont like it but at same time will spend more if better spec and easier to sell if I do go back to rallying. Also dont want not to spend enough and find I really like it and its not fast enough for me ( likely to be the case !)

Heading down to Border Hill rally to marshall so will speak to a few down there and see there is at least one car competing there that is for sale .

Any advice gratefully received

Cheers

George

George,

If you only intend to do Comp Safari's / Hill Rallies then 100" would be the way to go. Much better handling at speed and generally a bit more space than an 88". However an 88" Tomcat / Bowler style vehicle can compete in our Trials / Speed Trials events, the 100" is prohibited from these as they do not comply with the ALRC rules.

We normally run 7 Comp Safari's per season (This year we had one event in Northern Ireland and one at Driffield) and there is one Hill Rally event in the Scottish Borders (This weekend).
Although we are a Land Rover club and comply with ALRC rules the Comp Safaris are run in conjunction with SORC and SCCC and therefore you are allowed to race pretty much anything as long as it complies with MSA rules.

As for independent suspension or not, it really depends on how big your wallet is. Generally will be quicker but there is more specialised parts to go wrong. For your information this season a 300TDI live axle bowler won our championship.

My advice to you would be to get yourself to one of our Comp Safaris and have a look. You may be able to find someone to take you round for a lap to see what you think.
I have sent you a PM regarding an 88" Bowler that is for sale that may interest you.

Cheers

Stuart

My advice is to start with a relatively cheap 88" ALRC-compliant vehicle.
This way you can try a variety of events (Trials, mini-comps, the SCCC, and Hill Rallies).... and THEN work out what you want.

If you are looking for a vehicle to compete at the top level in speed events, then you're looking at some variety of independent suspension with a modern V8 of at least 4ltr - but the choice of vehicle (and the cost of vehicle) really means you need to experience the various options before you shell out.

Will you be at the "Borders"? There will be a large range of vehicles there for you to review (and possibly even look in)

Thanks for the replies , appreciated., Yes coming down to marshall at the Borders so intend to have a look at some of the different vehicles there. Good to know that a 100 would not be suitable for SLROC trials/speed trials although not sure this is the type of event I fancy but then again would probably be a good starting point ?
