Hi all. I have recently installed a defender 200tdi engine into my 90. It was a 2.5na, I have it starting perfectly now but it's running fast. Im guessing at around 1.5 - 2.5 k rpm. I have tried the adjustment rod on the injection pump. No difference. Any ideas how I can bring the rpm down? I have removed the viscous fan so maybe the engine is set up for more load in it?
-
you have adjusted the throttle cable correctly .................
right?
-
Yeah. Think that's the only bit I done right. All the intercooler hoses were mixed up so I think that's why it was running fast. I just need to figure out where each hose goes.
-
how the intercooler is plumbed or where the hoses go wont make it run fast, if its running fast its getting more fuel than it needs as such,
so either you have something holding the throttle open or someone could have played with the smoke screw on the back of the pump which when adjusted in to give more power will also increase the tickover,
however if you have adjusted the correct stop & allowed the throttle arm to rotate back more than what it was & the idle hasnt come down then id say you could possibly have a injection pump issue
-
I had both intercooler hoses running to the turbo? Won't that cause the running issues.
-
seriously how can you manage to do that :o
did you connect the turbo inlet to the intercooler that was then fed by the outlet of the turbo?
as in out the turbo through the intercooler & back into the turbo?
with nothing on the inlet manifold?
-
I wasn't really paying attention as I knew I still had the air box and snorkel to fit. I just threw it.all on. Lol. I was using a picture for reference and it turned out to be a 300tdi. Oooops.
-
as they say on lions den,
im out
too much face palm in here tonight
-
right,, made new hoses.. installed them where i think they should go now.. no difference at all.. any ideas guys. really want to get some use out of theis 90 soon.. :(
-
Which throttle cable did you use, the disco or your existing defender one?
When I fitted my 200tdi the defender cable didn't fit correctly, so I used the disco one, it fits perfect and allows for full adjustment.
The turbo hose intake/ front should go to the bottom fitting/ outlet from your air filter. The out let from the turbo should go to the bottom intake from the intercooler and the top hose from the intercooler should return to the engine to the intake manifold above you exhaust.
-
hi i used the defender cable as im fitted a defender engine not a disco one.. ill see how i fitted the hoses and see if i mixed one up again, this is the hard bit as its the first time i have done this.., wish me luck.. thanks..

Still not having any joy. Anyone near Dundee fancy having a look over it to see if they can see something I have missed? I think it's drawing in air but can't find out where from as it's stops hissing by the time I get under the bonnet. ;(
-
it can draw in as much air as it wants, its not an air leak thats making it run fast...........
-
Hmmmm. Will it run if I strip all the intercooler hoses off? And servo hose so I can try and eliminate those areas? I'll maybe have to get a garage to finish this of for me. >:( thanks mate. Appreciate the advice.
-
it will run if you strip all the pipework off back to the inlet manifold,
Servo hose is a vacum not pressure
-
Have you tried adjusting the idle speed screw ?

Hi. Yes. That made no difference but I was thinking of the power screw in the pic. Would that lower the rpm? Either that I need a new injection pump. How hard are they to fit?
-
Tried the idle screw again. Also the power screw. Boost hose. Took all the intercooler hoses ect back off. Nothing is making a difference. That's me at the end of my talent now. Anyone know a mechanic near Dundee.
-
i think you were near the end of your talent when you put the engine in 8)
-
Oi. No funny. >:(
-
did you see the engine running before you got it?
regards tom
-
No mate. I bought of a very good mate so had no reason to suspect a duff motor. Im almost ready to break it for bits now. It sounds great if only I can get the revs.down.
-
Maybe try having a look throught this to see if you did anything wrong.

-
Yeah I have that page bookmarked. Think I followed it very closely. Thanks.
-
Did you put a new timing belt on the engine?
If the pump timing is out, it would still run but would be smoky or lumpy, this may also make it run fast it the timing is to advanced.
-
I didn't, no. the guy my mate bought the engine from did. It sat in his garage for a couple of years and then I bought it.
-
I would check the pump timing if nothing else just to eliminate this from your list. The engine timing may be spot on but if the pump isn't firing at the correct moment this can cause the engine to run lumpy smoky etc.
You should always put a new belt on an engine that you don't have first hand knowledge off, every one will tell you that it's fine it had a new belt a couple of thousand miles ago just before I took the egine out!!!!
-
Hi. Thanks for your help but I wouldn't know how to check it. Never really worked on diesels before. I don't have a crank puller to check the belt either. Im at a loss with it.
-
so this engine has been through a few hands before you were sold it if it has been sat for a while things do seize up just thinking on other problems that can cause fast running does this type of pump have a governor diaphragm if it has this could be split (on bmc 2.2 diesels this caused over reving) going by previous posts you will have had the diaphragm of already to fiddle about with screws what may look alright could be u/s since this is not your forte
regards tom
-
It's only been through one owner, my mate. I haven't had the diaphragm off yet so I'll give that a look over. Im lost on diesels lol. Cheers for the advice. I really don't think it can be much. It is a bit Smokey if I let it run for a few secs but as it revs so high I don't let it run for long. :(
-
Well I took the diaphragm off the top of the fuel pump. Was a little oily but no splits. Is there another diaphragm I need to check?
-
Jon
When I put a Montego Diesel engine into my series, it had the same pump, and I did a little bit of tweaking. My memory isn't very good, but I recollect that under the diaphragm you've removed, there is a circular ring that if rotated has an effect on the speed of the fuel delivered. I recollect that it was on a very fine thread and it only took the slightest movement to fling everything out.
One of the symptoms was was it seemed to overfuel, and while it accellerated brilliantly, the engine got very hot and ran fast. As it's not hard to remove the diaphragm lid it's worth turning the circular ring one click at a time and see if that makes any difference. Remember and mark where you originally started.
I'm sure there was information about how to do this on the internet (possibly the same source as the drawings posted earlier) I recollect thtat the oinformation I got was from an American Truckers website as this type of pump is quite common.

Hi mate. Yeah I was looking at that part earlier. Might be worth a shot tomorrow. Not got anything to lose. Keep the heads coming. I think I have that article bookmarked somewhere too. :)
-
Had a landy mechanic look over the 90 today. Even he was. Bit stumped. So we decided to start stripping the timing case ect for removing the pump. When we took the belt.tensioner off the fuel pump jumped back a fair bit. Could it just be the pump was under tension from the belt and was jammed open?
-
Re timed it all up again. Still no change. Any ideas?
