Steel is worth about ?150-?200 per tonne, I work in the railway and we are seeing this every day, rails, cable, power wire. Don't go all out to blame the travellers, it looks  like organised crime plays a big part.not good news anyway.

Mel, we have had scrap stolen from the middle of a field near lockerbie, miles from anywhere, we put a security gate at carstairs, they cut a hole through the fence, these folk seem to know where to go, to cash in their loot, they need to be very friendly with a scrap dealer. I think its a lot bigger than travellers

We had some Irish guys in a transit pick up scouting round the farm where I have my workshop. It's up a single track road and is not in open view of the main road but they seem to have no problem finding a scrap pile! The police seem to be disinterested and don't seem to want to do anything especially when you mention "travelling people". It amazes me the brass neck these people have to drive into a place and start loading vans without anyone noticing or bothering to lift a phone.
I do my best to keep everything under lock and key after a roofer who has one of the other sheds had ?600 worth of lead flashing stolen. Ouch!
If you visit me my shed is the one with the " Armed Response Survivors Will Be Prosecuted" sign outside.

Cheers,
           Stevie.

John, after seeing a few films, I believe they fight you for the caravan and they just take your landy. serious note, from what we are told from the police, the problem is that wide spread they can't cope, these folk are pros at this game.

To give you an idea, we had two cable drums stolen and the police were conducting a "stake out" at the time, as I say these guys are not all travellers, mostly chancers feeding off other good folks belongings.

Liked that,we had this problem a couple of years ago when the price was very high although recently have not heard of any thefts, other than junkies getting caught trying to get lead off roofs.

Thats not to say its not going on a lot of people dont bother to report scrap being taken

suppose its one thing them chancing on what is clearly scrap at the side of a main road, but its still someone elses property. a lot more worrying if they travel up remote tracks to search out in barns etc thats clearly planned theft.
id guess police would look on it as a victimless crime though after all if its only scrap.....

Just round the corner from my house is the water board station. Scottish water are now on the market for new gate with chain&padlock and manhole covers! They went 2 weeks ago.
