3 phase converter
« on: May 31, 2012, 11:31:51 AM »
I've recently purchased a 3 phase, 3HP, Laycock ramp.

I borrowed a friends converter which works great without any car on it but as soon as a load goes on the ramp won't move - due to the ramp being 3HP and the converter 2HP.

So I'm looking for a 3HP 415V converter and have seen this one - http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/pc-40-3-5hp-phase-converter.

Anyone used this one, any other recommendations, or anyone have one for sale?

Cheers

You will need to be carefull as the start up curent will be a lot larger. ie convertor will not be able to give enough oomph even at the rated 3hp.

would it not be cheaper to buy the correct single phase motor at that price?

Read the manual!  It contains the following text

WARNING - THESE CONVERTERS ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR USE WITH CAR HOISTS, COMPRESSORS & VACUUM PUMPS DUE TO THEIR HIGH START UP LOADS.

Thanks.

I'm speaking to company down south that supplied a digital inverter to a friend with a 3HP ramp and it works really well. I'm looking for a single phase motor at the same time - but they aren't easy to get.

I've also found this supplier

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Lift-Hoist-Ramp-Motor-Switch-convert-single-phase-Also-3-phase-/110513297638?pt=UK_Lifting_Moving_Equipment&hash=item19bb1b18e6#ht_551wt_927

So may try to change it to a single phase motor which looks like it may be the cheeper option.

I have a mate who is a bit of a whizz with stuff like this, he built a 'box' a few years ago to run a 3ph mill and a lathe on single phase, if you get stuck pm me and I will get hold of him.

cheers
