The transformation begins, well after Shug completes the welding.

Shug at this point is saying "what have I done?" Dave is saying not this again?

All this for a bit of space in the back!
Order in to Lenny for every bush we could think of!

Did you phone the patient to see how she was? :o :o ;D
He was like a doting father when it came time to leave the patient in the hands of the surgeon, just hope she doesn't perish on the operating table, although he has gone private! ::) ::)
-
Lol, I didn't sleep last night!
-
Look at the skinny tyres. And the gargae is so clean & tidy, how do you manage it ;D
-
That's it untidy Ruari, I'm running out of space! Lol
-
you missed the picture of the hole in the end ::)
-
Forgot about that lol
-
Well, its starting to take shape, Shug is just about done with the welding and I've been furiously painting panels this week. But you know what they say, "if your gonna do a job" and all that.
The stages of the crossmember being replaced, great job Shug!

-
looks like some top notch fabrication/welding going on there !
-
Yep, Shugs done a grand job Kevin.
Welding completed today, in addition to that
A Frame Ball Joint & Bushes
Trailing Arm Bushes
Rear Shock Bushes
And more or less all new nuts & bolts.

Back to normal, at least until I get it home and take the tub/roof off again to start the clean up and paint the rest of the chassis before I start the conversion to SW.

-
Well, since bringing the Defender back up from Shug's the cab & tub have been removed again. I also removed the seat box today to get access to most of the chassis to start cleaning & painting.
You don't realise how many nooks & crannies there is to clean, I think I have half of Drumlog in my chassis lol
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad96/StephenOR/Defender/c7c2a294ba3eb360d58cb140f6d92b7a_zps5b92edeb.jpg)

This week has seen the removal of some more bits, fuel tank, sills etc
The chassis has now all been wire brushed, grinded, rust treated and a coat of red oxide

Haven't updated in a wee while but still been hard at it. Thank god the light nights are here, progress has been slow due to only being able to work on it on my days off.
Stripped out a lot of bits, fuel tank, sills brackets etc and painted them all. As you can see the chassis is now completely coated with hammerite and what a sh** job it was, it was like painting glue on so glad that's over.
I've painted one of the coil springs silver so will be doing the same with the other side once I've cleaned it up. That's pretty much all of the chassis work complete so time to start tidying up the seat box as its not the best then I'll make a start on the rear tub as it needs a bit of attention too.
Thanks to DaveT for his painting skills today!

Well, that's the chassis work complete thank god. Starting to see light at the end of the tunnel, not the cleanest job I've had to do. Glad to see the back of the Hammerite lol
Got some work to do on the seat box & tub next, not sure when I'll get to that as I'm working solid for the next week.
Some more photos

Looking good! :D
Looks as if you will be back on the road for the GRR!
-
I'll be going to the GRR in comfort Richard.
Picked up the paint today for the roof & sides etc but got a few repairs to do first to the seat box and tub, hopefully get them done his weekend and get the tub back on then I can make a start on the painting!
Feels never ending lol
-
Think there will be a few of us going in comfort :)
-
Hoping to be there. View looks stunning from Stephens pic, and without getting the D3 Dirty!
-
Looking good Stephen 8)
What all this about going in comfort!!
-
Cheers Graeme
A bit more work than I first anticipated but as everyone keeps saying its a Land Rover. It's all been worth it though, learning everyday lol
-
Good day out for D3 and 4s :o :o
-
Thought I better update, I have been busy honest.
Defender is now on the drive with the tub lined up and bolted on. This has given me space to finish painting the panels, as I said before a lot of the priming was done but I've since primed the roof and rubbed it down ready for the final coat.
I gave the rear door it's final coat today and very impressed with the rolling method of painting. I wasn't sure about this but it looks great. It'll make the rest of the car look sh*t now lol
Tomorrow I'll be painting the side panels so I can get those bolted on but need seals first. I've still to get the waist seals so need to get them sharpish!
Roof still has a bit of residue on it from rubbing down!

Looking good 8)
You are getting near the finishing post now.
Seeing that you have mastered painting with the roller, my kitchen needs painted ;)
-
Weather was in my favour today so got loads done.
Attached the battery box back to the seat box with body seal & rivets, then painted the seat box, floor pans & side panels. I also cleaned up what seals I have and the side windows, they needed a good clean and all the old sealant removed.
I also lined up the tub again as it wasn't sitting properly. Roof to get painted tomorrow but need to acquire waist seals. I'm gonna plead for some in Wanted section before going to Paddocks or LR.
Battery box

Got the roof painted today, can't believe how good this painting has come out, really impressed with the finish.
Paddocks delivery arrives tomorrow, this will bring the seals that I need to put it all together and small things like door strikers etc.
I'm getting there! ::)

Was well impressed with the paint though, may need to do mine soon

I'll get the big wheels back on this week. I'm going for more paint soon so let me know if you want me to get you some?
-

I quite like the white rims. Looks a totally different vechicle now - so when does it get the V8 ;D.
I wonder if Graeme is following this thread ;)
-
Lol, I couldn't afford to run a V8! Love the power though, amazin.
When is Graeme starting his, think I've got a couple of spare seals etc
-
Another wee bit done tonight. Started putting the footwells back together etc only a couple of screws to go in the seatbox and its complete.

There's an RTV on Sunday 23rd, I believe it is Torphichen.
I think you should keep noddy's wheels on it though ;D ;D
-
It'll be ready but I think the Insa's will be staying on lol
-
Today saw a wee bit of shopping for paint, Shug had the same idea as I met him in the shop lol
Then, battery fitted, handbrake refitted and seats. Even managed to get it running for the first time in about 10 weeks, started first time without a blip, good old 300tdi.

-
just need to powder coat the checker plate now a nice black :o :o :o
-
It's on the long list of things still to do :-\
-
Wheres the sound proofing on the seat box?
Looking smart would look better with a winch.
-
Don't have the sound proofing yet. The stuff I took off was glued on and came off in a thousand pieces lol
I'll get round it some day, winch too!
-
Looking smart would look better with a winch.
He has a winch that he uses .......... mine ::) ::)
-
After a bit of faffing about its now ready for the MOT.
Had to mess around replacing the fuel tank etc but all that's left to do is the nice bits. Paint the rest of the panels, new door hinges & seals and maybe some proper sound proofing but these things aren't desperate.
What is desperate is getting it back out, very soon!
12 weeks later!
What's your thoughts?

Bearing in mind it looked like this,
(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad96/StephenOR/798fbfc78efd7fb3d27494838f95c4f4.jpg)
-
Far better, a lot less clostrophobic inside. :) :) The paint looks good as well, have to have a go at mine to freshen it up a bit.
-
Definitely worth it Dave and its not too difficult or expensive to do!
-
I like not too expensive
-
Did you carpet and fit seats in the rear?
-
Not yet Ruari, it'll just be rubber mats in the back when I get round to it, possibly 2 seats as well but not in a hurry. Concentrating on the MOT which is Wednesday!
-
carpet, but the back get full of water??? ::) ::) ::)
-
Yea but carpet dries out, helps omit the road noise to some extent and gives it that luxurious feel. Come for a ride in the 110 next time to see the difference 8)
-
Dreaded MOT tomorrow, wish me luck?
-
Goodluck. :D
-
Cheers Jon,
I'm afraid it failed, requires a rear wheel bearing and apparently there's an issue with the passenger seat frame. He's says its broken but I haven seen it yet! :( :(
-
That doesn't sound too bad. Hope it's fixed quick.
-
I suppose it could've been worse. Just desperate to get it back on the road, hopefully tomorrow.
-
Trust me I know that feeling. Had my 90 for ages now doing a 200tdi conversion on it. Still haven't driven it yet. :(
-
We have a road legal Defender.
Rear bearing replaced and one of the seat frame brackets that screws to the seat box had to be welded so all done and MOT'd.
Bring on Sunday! ;D
-
Lucky man. Want to come and fix mine? :D
-
It's a good feeling Jon,
Glad it's over to be honest, well apart from some painting but at least I can have some fun at the weekends instead of lying under it covered in oil lol
Good luck with yours!
-
I need lots of good luck. Once I find and fit an injection pump. I have the passenger footwell to weld. And two rear wheel bearing seals. That's it.
-
I might do a wee drive by on Saturday and have a nosey on Saturday on my way to fix the S3 after coming back from Shugs funnily enough to get some more parts.
Rich
-
Rich,
I'm working Saturday but it'll be sitting in the drive. I'll PM you!
Stephen
-
You need to get a new avatar now I think ;D ;D,
-
I'll try and get a good one on Sunday! ;D
-
It looks really smart, had a wee drive by on Saturday. You've done a smashing job on it.
Rich
-
Really nice job. What paint method did you use (Brush, spray, etc) and where did you get your paint from?

Sorry I couldn't have been here, ended up not getting home til after 8.
-
Really nice job. What paint method did you use (Brush, spray, etc) and where did you get your paint from?
Thanks
I mainly used the roller method, went on a treat and used the brush for awkward bits. I got the paint from A L Paints in Kilmarnock, works out about £17 a litre I think.
-
Got it's first outing today at the RTV, performed great and Dave & I even managed to sit in the back and have lunch lol

Bit uncomfortable though........

It wasn't that bad, we can't all afford the luxury of seats lol

Perfect. That's what I wanted to hear... And what prepwork did you do on it before rollering a bucketload of paint on? :)
-
Hi mate,
I used etch primer where required after giving all the panels a rub down with a 600 grade wet/dry.
Primed panels with 2 coats of grey primer, a rub down between coats and then 1 coat of the enamel finish coat. Primer was rolled on as well. I used small gloss rollers from Homebase.
Hope this helps.
Stephen
-
Well, still been at it. Having done the conversion I had to get it all painted. I've still got the drivers door to finish but it's finally taking shape!

-
you just need to get it dirty now!
-
Oh no, couldn't do that ;)
-
So now Stephen has embarressed me into life with paint, I thought i would have a go at my roof as its had a load of filler in where the old aerial came out.
It really was one of them days though, first I broke my rear washer nozzle, I unscrewed it and pushed it through as I thought it would break if I tried to pull the tubing off. That was ok until I shut it in the door!
Then I put the paint down on the ladder, but as our drive is on a slope it all poured all over the drive!
Then worst of all, was up the step ladder to do the front near the middle and I fell off the top of the ladder, I now have an ankle twice its normal size, and you should see the sympathy I get in the house........... no I couldn't find any either.
On the positive side, the roof now looks really good for an outlay of £11.92 for half a litre of LR white, need to have a go at the rest in due course.
-
Lol, clearly you can't be trusted to do a job on your own.
Hope your ankle is ok for next week?
-
Wild horses wouldn't stop me,
-
Maybe Tracey will need to drive and you can be navigator?
-
Dave Naviagate :-\ I think he's got a hotline to Louise for the amount of guidance on the map work he has been getting ;D
-
It's just the poor instructions :o ::) ::)

Tradesman blaming his tools ???
