2.5TD 19J oil leak
« on: May 20, 2012, 10:19:57 PM »
Hi, I have a 2.5TD 19J and there is oil leaking from between the block and flywheel housing. There is no oil in the flywheel housing so its not the rear crankshaft oil seal(replaced last year when clutch was done).

I though it was the sump so i changed the gasket.

It looks like i will need to pull out the engine and remove the flywheel housing for a look and see. It appears to have water in the oil also, but not mixed(milky) possibly rain water.

Is there any seals/gaskets between the block and flywheel housing? Any ideas?

Thanks

Alasdair

i think the 19j like the 200 tdi have a ladder rail thing just above the sump these can leak but you do need engine out to remove it and reseal.

hope this helps cheers Bill

Does this mean drop the sump?
I have heard there are some cork seals near the crankshaft but do not see anything in parts book!

More googling!

Thanks for your replies. I callled in to Land Rover today and ordered 2 T seals £3 each! I was told i would need a land rover special tool to fit the seals.

I will order up a sump gasket, rear oil seal and change to a HD clutch fork while i am in there.

Will go to the driving day on sunday then remove the engine.

Thanks Again

To seal the whole housing to the block I cleaned it up and and used a quality automotive sealant. This was because I could find nowhere online with a large gasket for the rear of the block.

You have the smae problem as i do. I have replaced the 'T' seals and crankshaft seal in the clutch housing but ignorantly did not apply the sealant between the clutch housing and the block.

So, once again i will be taking the engine out, but i suppose you learn from your mistakes.

I would recommend buying genuine parts as aftermarket parts are not of the same quality, and if a job is worth doing, its worth doing properly!

Good luck.

Got the T seals from land rover and was planning in taking the engine out to fit. However after driving around Drumclog all day and after a wee blast down the motorway, i arrived home. I jumped out to position my drip tray(only one now :P) theres no leak, not even a trace of oil. ;D

I have checked to see if there is oil in the engine and all is fine.

Its fixed itself.

How?

yeh, first thing i did was check oil level ;D.

Went a trip to dump today about 20mins heavy traffic, still no leak.

Im starting to think rain water has an effect on this leak!

Engine removal has been postponed for now but will update when job starts.

Thanks
