2.5 na help
« on: May 02, 2011, 10:05:54 PM »
My Series rebuild is nearly back together, just need to sort the engine out, (2.5na 15j Sherpa). I need some help to get my engine running off the key.  The problem was present before stripping down, but axle removal put a stop to this going further. At some point I did get the engine to fire off the key, but the next day it wouldn't.  So I'm sure it's just setup.

New fuel tank, lines, filter & fresh diesel.
Cold start screw on lucas cav pump had sheared head so was weeping fuel. I found a note in another forum of another chap who made this screw, so done this.
No stop solenoid with seperate switched power supply. (2.25d ignition switches off power when cranked.)

Engine will start and run if towed. but won't idle. I had wound up the idle but have since read not to do this and thus wound it back.

How do I set the correct idle adjustment and also what is the correct position for cold start screw.
Is there anything else to look at?

Hi Ruari

This sounds more like air getting in the system rather than set up as symptoms are not consistent. put a clear bit of fuel line in before pump and check for bubbles.

Hope this helps cheers Bill

Id agree with Buffalo Bill could be air. I had a 19j that had a seriouse air leak and caused no end of problems till the split pipe was found. Suppose you could take that out the situation for now and just check the engine runs fine period. Use a wee gizzy with fresh deisel and directly plumb up to your lift pump.with your return going into the same gizzy if it has one.  This way you take away the filter, tank and all the pipework in between.

It's fitted with clear hoses. Which is how I realised it was getting air before and thus found the cold start screw to be damaged. New pipes from the tank to filter, filter to pump and return to filter. Only old pipe is the return to tank. Just realised that the connection for filter onto return pipe isn't a union nut, but a couple pieces of pipe cobbled together. Would the return cause this problem? It doesnt leak nor do I see any bubbles in the clear pipes?

So tonight gave it a tow and away it went. But it does need throttle to tow start it. It won't idle, it will only sit ticking over with moderate revs, (luckily throttle pedal is sticky and no return spring fitted). As soon as the throttle drops it stops dead. So I guess this is why it wont start on the key. The lucas injection pump has 2 adjusting screws for idle. 1 is on the main throttle lever. This I've read not to increase as the cold start will be disabled. The 2nd is the one to adjust for idle speed. I wound this up but to no avail. Is there a screw for mixture adjustment?

Maybe im reading it wrong but does it have the stop solanoid in the injection pump? If so take it oot remove the plunger and spring put them to oneside and replace the stop solanoid body abck into the pump and wire as normal. There is a chap on the forum from currie who recently had a leaking injection pump on his n/a he might be a good chap to speak to for advice cant mind his name for the life of me though.

Hi Scott

Fuel solenoid allready had the plunger removed, so I replaced it with a new one and wired it direct to  +Ve with  a fuse and switch. Idid run it with a light bulb to see if the bulb went out when turning over. I think  seeing as the engine won't idle atlow revs then this be the cause for not starting on the key. I'm convinced it is to do with the cold start screw which I had to make. I'm going to take the old screw to a friend with a lathe for a more precise screw.
