Stalling
« on: July 03, 2010, 12:40:55 PM »
I have a series 3 petrol which will run well then suddenly stall and will not restart, wait 10 mins and will start and run fine for anywhere between 3 and 20 miles and then will happen again, have done timing, new pugs, leads, points, condenser, distrubuter, coil and cleaned out fuel sediment bowl, may be the fuel pump or blocked jets on the carb but dont know how to do these, any help welcome.

How does it stall? Is it a gradual thing (possibly fuel) or is it like a switch being thrown (probably ignition?).  Have you checked that the tank breather isn't blocked?

Any white residue on the carb body?  Sounds like carb icing  :-\ but surely not this time of year (even in Scotland  :D )

I would suspect a dirty jet first. My V8 did this when the fuel tank was changed.

Have changed the tank recently, how do I clear the jets sounds like the solution.

It sounds more like a faulty coil to me. When it stops working check that you are still getting a spark at the plugs. If not then its a lot easier to change a coil than dismantle a carb. In my experience with Zenith carbs if a jet gets blocked it stays blocked until you clear it. But a faulty coil will recover when it has cooled down.

New coil doesn't mean good coil.

Hi
Long time since I worked on one of these but I vaguely recall that if excess heat transfers through from the exhaust manifold to the inlet then the fuel can vapourize in the carb. If you separate the manifolds you should see if the hot spot joint is cracked/split etc/
