Security solutions for Series 3
« on: May 23, 2013, 11:34:33 AM »
Hi guys

I'm planning to bring my land rover down the road to London next week. So I'm looking for recommendations on what I can do to make it more secure and less stealable!

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

I used a Disklock (http://www.disklokuk.co.uk/) on my series, then on my defender.

It's thatcham rated if I remember about £100. Seems to get good reviews.

You can get a clamp for the pedals, clutch claw. http://www.centinel.org.uk/clutch_claw.asp
Or ebay do a budget version.

Or unplug an HT lead

Hahahah! Yes, what Shug says!
It depends what part of London you are visiting, but wouldn't worry too much. If a thief really wants it, then they will bring a low-loader.  My S3 88 lived with me in London for years and I had no problems at all. A shiny new Defender is a much more interesting proposition than a old barge. If you just want to deter joyriders, then maybe one of those pedal box thingies?

Apart from posting about items that are freely available on the web, please don't post "secret" solutions to this topic - you never know is watching.

Just a thought.

Cheers Clive

Things I've done:
* Leave the high/low lever in neutral
* Pop an HT lead (means you need to open the bonnet to drive anywhere)
* Remove the rotor arm (like the HT lead, only your hands get even grubbier)
* Fit a battery isolator
* fit a fuel-valve somewhere inobvious
* Nowth - just left it looking scruffy

I've only ever had one land rover stolen: and that was locked, on a farm, and not accessible to an "opportunist" theft

It doesn't matter what you do: the more valuable the sum-of-the-parts, the more likely the vehicle is to be stolen. Scruffy old land rovers have a low value, just like any other scruffy old car...
Lock the doors (unless its a soft-top) and leave valuables out of sight

The only one I have had stolen was a freshly rebuilt, very Red and shiny Ser3.

It had just about every cunning device known to man on it to prevent theft, Police reckoned it was just dragged onto a beavertail.
Had an agreed valuation, insurance fought my claim all the way.

Have had scruffy and cheap ever since, still with cunning devices, not had a problem, mind you the choice of loud colours might have helped.

Have drilled a hole in the brake peddle and pulled security chain through steering wheel then locked with Chubb security padlock through the peddle, bit of a pain but seems to work.

If they are going to steal it and determine no amount of security is going to stop them , but that said fit a isolated to the ignition and fuel under passenger seat or somewhere out of sight this will render it Un-drivable and yes leave all gears in neutral .
I have heard of extreme solutions even to point a wheel car clamp fitted didn't stop them as someone said its the parts that make the money not the selling of a complete vehicle they are stealing.
