What size wheels for a 1994 Defender 90

What size wheels for a 1994 Defender 90

Well I think thats the car sorted, now I need some wheels and tyres. It is mainly for off road use but will need to drive between sites.

If it has say a 2 inch lift what size and type of wheel/tyre combo suits these the best without getting to stupid prices?

Who would you consider to be the best suppliers or does anyone have anything lying about they want rid off?  ;)

personaly i wouldnt bother with a suspension lift
my 90 has 235/85/16 tyres, usual would be 235/70/16 or similar
lifts the DIFS up and by default the body
i dont have steering guards, rear dif guard fell off, no intention of replacing it. i honestly cant remember the last time i got hung up on difs driving ruts. you have an almost 90deg aproach angle, not much less on the back end, and if you could high centre a 90 on breakover angle, then hats off to you, your being optimistic with your route lol.
90s are almost unstopable standard form so unless your going into challenge winch events etc then why mess with perfection?

a decent set of muds will take you almost anywhere. strong front and rear recovery is a top priority for getting other folk out. spend your money sorting the nut behind the wheel ;) rather than upgrading a motor is my choice

gives a 'Tyre selector' & local Tyre Centre.

Or check what your local place can do for you in Mud Tyres.

Some sites that are easy to check tread petterns on for various sizes,
& are good value for wheel & tyre packages.

or JCS 4x4 wheels & tyres,
You then have Camskill, Paddocks, John Craddocks etc etc
 
are all good for service & price.
You need to watch tho, a wheel package can arrive supposed to be balanced
but will still end up costing you to go loccally to have done properly.

Approach angle of "almost 90 degrees"? That is a harrier i believe,or maybe a tank.Or a lothian region bus.

well dont know what approach angle lothian region buses had considering that company no longer exists ??? ??? it became lothian buses some 10 years ago....anyway....
but standard buses dont have a very good approach angle, its because the front wheel sits so far back from the front of the vehicle, also the body/bumper sits very close to the ground it does limit its 'offroad ability'

im not sure how buses or harrier jets got into this conversation but there again stranger things have happened

if you read some of the many offroad magazines they will explain better how approach angles etc work, or if you know someone with more offroad experience they could explain and perhaps demonstrate it to you.

in simple terms as a defenders bumper/body does not extend far beyond the front wheels it allows a better approach angle, as apposed to a normal car which tends to have the front wheels sitting further back on the vehicle with bodywork or bumpers extending further forward. if it would help you i would be happy to post up a couple of pictures which may help explain it better.

What I think was ment, that in no way does a standard 90 on 70-85 profile tyres have a aproach angle of 90 degrees. But It your willing to give it a try. Drive your 90 to a wall and see what hits first. The tyres or the bumper. Have fun trying ::)

Testing the theory of 90 degrees.
When approaching the 90 degree shall we call it a vertical wall it should not be approached at more than 10 miles per hour this will limit the damage to the vehicle .If on the other hand the 90 degree approach is downwards,you can test to see if air assisted brakes work while in mid air.To confuse the issue it is actually possible to negotiate angles of 90 degrees with specialist equipment and a lot of knowledge.Don't try it at home.
Maybe jumbo could post some footage on you tube demonstrating this.
Back to tyres scot tyre at Broxburn and the real experts at edinburgh and borders New life tyres/redpath tyres what they don't know about tyres is not worth knowing.
The best way to decide is to go to an event or off road place and watch what others have and how they perform

 i have a nearly 90 degree approach angle, but in saying that i do have 37" tyres  ;D

A set of (4) 235/85r16 Cooper Discoverers on black modulars is ?500 from John Craddocks. These are good off road tyres, but also good, if not a tad noisy, on tarmac.

Ordered the Coopers from Silverline yesterday and arrived today, great service.

A couple of points though, they only have silver wheels at present (black soon and gunmetal will be a few weeks) and apparently the STs are not available at the moment because of how they are made, he did explain but didn't really pay attention. Got the STTs at ?495 but they will probably have gone up by now, but check the ad to see if it has changed yet.
