It will be classed as modified due to the galavanised chassis and is coil sprung, it is a 2.5 n/a and has a 5 speed gear box. My dad and uncle will also be insured. Iam looking for suggestions for cheap car insurance companys and a few prices from young drivers would be helpful  thnaks very much george jnr

Hi there. Do you get LRO or any other Landy mag? Best thing i would suggest is to phone as many insurance companies as you can that specialise in Landrover insurance, to get quotes, and compare them all-see what you get for your money. May be beneficial to put it on a limited mileage, and/or a collectors policy, although some may be restricted if its modified. If you can afford it, go for fully comp too.

I was insured with NFU and my renewal doubled in price. I phoned a few and ended up going with Lancaster insurance whose quote was less than half what the nfu quoted. (Interesting enough, the policy was with Equity Redstar who insured my Herald when i was 18, and i rallied it.)

Good luck.

I would try a call to Sureterm Direct.
www.sureterm.com

If you are to be the principle/main driver on the Insurance,
then
One additional named experienced driver,
with a low risk proffesion & their own insurance may be the cheapest,
2 named drivers might be a little more expensive.
Thats if the vehicle is registered to you as the Owner/Keeper.
(Some companies do recognise parent/guardian named drivers as of equall drivers on the insurance,
eg Swinton & Admiral Multicar for just normal/unmodified vehicles)

Limit the annual Mileage. (they can check by your MOT's & your declaration,
make sure every detail of the vehicle & modifications are declared)
They will want to know if its Social & pleasure use only,
commuting to work or education will put the price up again possibly.
Kept on private ground/drive & kept there during the day (not at a workpace),
& parked at the home postcode at night may be cheaper.

If the Vehicle is no longer on the original Registration number it may be considered as a new/rebuild not modified,
thats not a problem with Sureterm,
they may be asking for an engineers report,
but you being under 25 years old with a modification or rebuild might be the stumbling point.

www.premiumchoice.co.uk
are not doing young drivers now with modified, or they were not earlier this year.
'Footman James', '2gether' & the usual 'Adrian Flux',
'Carole Nash', 'NFU mutual' etc are all worth trying.
lots of them have changed the minimum age of drivers this past year.

With the NFU & young drivers, it helps if a family member is already insured with them.

Hopefully someone here has recent experience of getting cover.
all the best
george

I have got a quote for a S3 with a 19J fitted from Flux, ?454 3rd party fire and theft which is pretty darn good I thought! Should be able to improve it with a club discount and even chatting on the phone to them. I'm 21 and have no NCB because I have not been a policy holder. Not tried NFU yet but the RR is with them and they have been very reasonable as when I was 17 no one else would consider me on the policy.

As someone above says, Flux and NFU (try a few different offices though, some are great some are awful!) are worth a go.

Rangerovering i wouldn't hold out much hope of a decent quote from the nfu, they almost doubled my defender policy and have never been within ?300 of the nearest other quote for my discovery, i dont think they like shiney's, i think everybody is being tortured by ins companys just now >:( >:(

i think it must be the modified part thats killing you - im 24 with zero NCB for mine (second car) on a 6k limited milage policy on a standard 2.5TD 90 with adrian flux - 400 quid.

although i ran through a quote at 25 for me and it was 150 quid !

admiral also came up good for us.

what security have you got if any - that may help - modified might be more desirable in their eyes !
`87 ninety - full rebuild with 11l 200tdi conversion ,2 inch lift and 13 inch shocks and relevent protection/sliders./ dislocation cones

Goes like a stabbed rat.

Sorry my last post is not very well written! Currently insure the RR with NFU, they have been fine for the last 4 years. Going to have to get the price down this year though, which being long term customers (nearly 20 years!) should be possible.

Forgot to say the S3 was a 3000 mile limit as well.

Interesting that they consider the galvy chassis to be a modification. I informed my insurers, Land Rover Insurance, and when I told them that it had a new galvanised chassis, had been converted from a hard top to a station wagon and had a winch on the front I was expecting to get hammered as I was paying ?295pa protected NCB, fully comp and miles limited to 5000pa............ the call centre operator had to connect me through to the brokerage dept and they only wanted a letter from me stating the changes I had made and that no mechanical modifications had been made that would enhance the performance (well a new chassis would as the car wouldn't gone very far on it's old rotten one!) otherwise they were not interested, even though I increased the number of passengers from 2 to 6 (potentially a huge claim if I killed them all) but they still were not worried. Have just renewed for another year and I'm paying ?285 this year! Maybe I'm no longer considered to be a young driver...............

Tim,
its not a galvanised chassis thats the modification,
a like for like replacement gets new chassis numbers issued by the DVLA & should be no problem with any insurance company.

its it being a coil sprung galvanised chassis on a series 11 which was not a Coil Sprung vehicle when built.

If this is a recent re-chassis,
& not being a like for like replacement, then that means its been due to have an
IVA carried out & is possible now on a Q plate.
'radically altered vehicle' as far as the DVLA are concerned, plus an engine change.

Maybe Doorslammer can tell us about it..

george

A replacement galv chassis does NOT get a new chassis number from DVLA. The VIN stays exactly the same.
If its not broken you are not trying hard enough....

Mine did.
so "does not" may not be quite accurate a statement.

on production of the Reciept for the 'new non galvanised chassis' & an inspection of that new chassis once built on the vehicle (no charge)
i was then allowed to get the new 'Chassis plate' which the chassis manufacturer produced for me,
 welded to the chassis,
i could have stamped it on tho.
The new number was not the same as the one that was on the vehicle before it was written off.

Others on here must be able to tell how it went with them notifying the DVLA.
They may have the same experience as you, & it would be good to hear if any were issued with new chassis numbers.
The V5 that was issued carries the new chassis numbers & also the engine numbers for the engine thats fitted,
the VIN plate does not carry these new numbers,
i have never changed it, as you dont require to when you notify the DVLA of a replacement engine.

I have had a re-chassis in the past that did carry its original numbers as displayed on the VIN plate.

A re-build that can not keep its original registration number due to a lack of points is a different matter again.
New or previously used chassis requiring a IVA or at least a VIC,because of different axles, engine/gearbox & no proof of real age gets a new identity,
An age related plate if it can be proven or a Q plate.

Thanks George, I sort of didn't take note of the coil spring bit. I didn't get a new chassis number with mine 4 years ago either

Strange being given a new number, it is the same vehicle after all!
