Brake pedal

200TDI Disco.

Brake pedal goes very hard on 2nd or 3rd consecutive application, then becomes ineffective.

OK again after a short while or if rev's kept high.

Can't find any vacuum leaks, servo u/s?

fluid leaks?
low fluid?
old (water contaminated) fluid

Thereafter you're looking at seals - but I'd expect visible leaks at that point!

Nope no fluid loss in three years, changed for new fluid when I bought it.

Done around 30K miles in it since I bought it, Jap import with around 60K miles when I bought it.

Always been like it, blanked EGR off about 15k ago, no change.

Have lived with it but the esteemed and venerable refuses to drive it unless I can improve this 'exciting' characteristic.

theres a small vacuum pipe goes round the back of the cylinder head, its maybe rubbed thru, its years since it happened to me but if i remember right it tees into the pipe to the fuel pump as well. its a small black plastic pipe about 4mm

worth a look.

With the engine off, pump the brake pedal several times to dump the vacum, then with your foot firmly on the brake pedal start up, if the pedal does not go down then you have a servo/vacum problem.
She said at my age I need something else to play with
