D1 300TDI Fuel Filter Replacement
« on: September 03, 2014, 12:45:50 PM »
Hi.  Looking to replace the fuel filter on my Discovery 1.  Seems pretty straightforward but is there anything I need to bear in mind re. fuel pressure in the system?  (I seem to recall on a TD5, in theory, you need to prime the system once replaced?).

Thanks, Alan.

The main fuel filter, as in the one on the bulkhead, is not under pressure (its filled by the mechanical pump, the "lift" pump, on the side of the engine)

The only tips are
1) Don't tip it when lifting it out (or you'll spill fuel), and
2) transfer fuel into the new one, so there's fuel for the engine to run on.

Once you've got it back together, the vehicle should happily start.
There's a small (10mm?) bolt on the very top - this is the bleed-point: open it half a turn and allow air to escape, then tighten it up again once it starts to weep fuel.

The mechanical lift pump on the side of the engine has a little lever that you need to pump while the bleed screw is open to fully expel all air. If your fuel tank level is low make sure the car is on level ground. Alternatively, crank the engine over for a while until she starts. Easy job.
