wheel nuts on mk1 disco loose
« on: October 08, 2010, 03:42:49 PM »
Hey.
Had a noise like a ticking coming from my front passenger wheel. Diagnosed as o loose nut. On stopping I found 3 out of 5 nuts were loose. When I put the wheels on I did torque them to I think it was 129(whatever autodata specified as the alloy torque) on checking the other wheels there was other loose nuts. Could this be I didn't do a second tightening after a day or two. Or was there more then 1 std thread size.

Don't want to get it off my lecturer on Monday morning when I take it in. Lol.

I had Disco wheels on my Defender and the torque setting was 140 ftlb, maybe check yours, also are you sure that the torque wrench is calibrated and not out.

Have the wheels been painted,
& is there new paint in the nut seating?
clean it out if there is, a bit of a sanding down.

If these are correct disco wheels check that they are the correct nuts for that wheels,
ie, check the cone sit properly in the wheel.
Dont take it for granted that they are correct.

The wheels are genuine disco mk1 alloys. Unwanted. With the standard nuts for disco mk1s alloys in that the don't have a 'cone' the just are a snug fit. The torque for steel wheels is 140. Alloys were specified 129.
