How to clean the headliner?
« on: May 07, 2013, 11:34:13 AM »
I have dust, mud scuffs ( don't ask) and mildew spots on the headliner. It appears to be a very soft white/cream flecked plastic material. Any suggestions how to clean it without bringing the whole lot down - it's a 1996 TDi300 County Hard Top with conversion to a Station Wagow.
On my drive now - Zanzibar Bronze Evoque 5 door Dynamic Lux Plus with Intelligence & Black Packs with Tan interior
Gone - Fuji White RR Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux Plus
Staying - 1996 Epsom Green TDi 300 CHT that is now a CSW

Let us know how you get on. I use the steam cleaner on mine with moderate results.

Well tried 2 types, both from Halfords - one was Autoglym Rubber and Vinyl Cleaner which I applied to the front part of the headliner and the other was Simoniz Fabric Cleaner which I applied to the rear cabin headliner. The Simoniz was better BUT despite what the instructions say it's best to wear a dust mask when applying it as it smells rather like oven cleaner inside the confines of the car and certainly irritates the lungs if you breath in the atomised fallout from the spray................ it sprays on as a foam which you then wipe in with a clean cloth. No need to dry it or wipe off. Took me about 10 minutes to do the entire roof liner and the Simoniz stuff can also be used on cloth seat fabric. The Autoglym stuff is more like interior polish and comes in a trgger pack so no aerosol propellant to choke you! It was just as good and smelt nicer and can also be used to clean mats and rubber and vinyl trim in the cabin.

Not sure the photos will come out too well but here are before and after

"Flash" would probably do a similar job - its what I've used before.
If its not broken you are not trying hard enough....
