Freelander TD4 not starting Help
« on: December 24, 2010, 05:35:02 PM »
After four weeks of battering though the snow and the sub zero tempretures, my td4 gave up this morning, cranking it over but no spark, phoned the RAC they reckon its an engine managment problem, anyone any ideas? Couldnt have happened at a worse time, its been towed down to the local garage as I type, dont want my pants pulled down ,any help most welcome.

Cheers

First thought would have been a flat battery/loose battery terminal.
(even the battery a bit low can be enough to bring everything to a halt)

Possibly combined with a bit of diesel waxing/iced/waxed inline fuel filter.

Have you charged your battery in the passed 4 weeks?

The AA say,
15,000 break downs a day sort of thing.
Thats probably 14,000 flat batteries , 500 out of petrol, a few flat tyres & some break downs.

Good luck with it.

Hi George, no i have not charged the battery, I have done about 1200 miles in the last 4 weeks and its never missed a beat.

Bit of a result, the recovery guy who turned up is landy freak, he had a further tinker, he reckons either diesel pump or immobilser fault, took a pipe off and sprayed some stuff down it which in his opinion rules out the pump.

He said if its immobilser, looks like it will be dealership bound at ?137 per hour, unless GEMM can do anything with it.

Hope is a cheap fix, :( and the snow stays away! My mate has promised me a lone of his brand new 90 should I require it ;D

Any further views and opions are welcome.

Have a good Christmas

Check the fuel pump is running. If not, a sharp tap sometimes works. Changing the pump/filter is easy and quick.

agree with Geoff, had same symptoms last year, car was running fine, went into Wickes for 10mins when came out would turn over but wouldnt fire up. Tried various things then AA turned up and he checked over things and gave pump in engine bay a light tap with handle of screw driver, fired up straight away and has been fine since.
Good luck, fingers crossed.

Fuel pump (under bonnet ) is about 90 quid from ebay, and it all just unclips and clips back together. "Simples!!"

Make sure the pump isn't running before you shell out for a new one.
