Rear Clunk

Hey,

When I'm releaseing the clutch its clunking before it takes off.

I've checked the shaft andthe bolts are tight.

Is there any clever way to check if its the halfshafts without taking them out?

If I do take them out what am I looking for? ???
We all know that small cars are good for us. But so is cod liver oil. And jogging.

If on a coiler it is likely to be the rear A frame ball joint. Either that or there is excessive spline wear on the mainshaft of an LT77 gearbox.

The clunk can be take up of backash in the drivetrain.

areas of wear are:-
splines on output shaft of gearbox going into transfer box
transfer box gear teeth
bolts/cardan joints and splines of propshaft
rear diff input flange spline or diff gear teeth
splines from rear diff to road wheels via halfshafts

add these all together.

there is always some backlash even in a brand new system.

other sources of clunks can be the axle moving if the spring bushes are worn, or if the spring carrier bolts are slack.

Worn propshaft universal joints would be the first thing I would check. Twist them by hand and see how much free-play is present.

Spring carrier bolts.... Hmm they are quite new they might have seated themselves and come loose.

To check the splines on the gearbox do you need to drop the propshaft?

I'm in Kirkliston.

I'll get under her over the weekend and tighten up the spring plate bolts. If it still clunks I'll take out the rear halfshafts and see if they have twisted splines.

no, you open the round plate at the back of the transfer box and look inside the input gear.
chalk the wheels and take the handbrake off, and put the car in gear, ENGINE OFF, and raise one read wheel off the ground. you can then, by hand, rotate the prop or handbrake drum slightly and look at the backlash between the gear and the inner shaft (gearbox output shaft), there should be very very little or none.....
