Title: Burger Van wanted...
Post by: Pilot Custard on April 03, 2012, 02:28:43 PM
For the past three years, we've had a burger van at the scottish comps.

The first lot did well, and sold the business (and its now working shows)
The second guy has started a cafe in his local town.

I've tried chasing a couple of leads, but not got anywhere.

I'm looking for the following dates:
- Sunday 15th April (Dumbarton area)
- 12/13th May (Lanarkshire area)
- 18/19 August (Stirling area)
- 15/16 September (Bathgate)
- Sunday 21 October (Borders)

We are used to 8am to about 5pm..... later for Saturday evenings.

Anybody know any burger vans (of the roadside/layby variety)?

Why don't we set up a gazeebo with a BBQ and do our own catering.
It could be faily simple. tea, coffee, bacon & sausage rolls in the morning, burgers and mabey a curry at lunchtime.

Sorry guys i hope i'am not over stepping the mark here. I have done this before at different events and it can cause a problem.... Say you were to make someone sick etc poor cooking... (Not that i made anyone sick) The way i got around it was to give the food away but had a donation box in front of the stand. Dont know if this is fully legal but might be worth looking into. On another note you can have good quality food so long as you are not out to make a proffit. Win Win situ.

Sorry Ian, the only commercial people I know would not want to spend all that time on site unless they were looking at Festival type numbers of sales -or at least "busy Industrial Estate lunchtime"  :-(

If you could find volunteers to run a catering stall its not that difficult to get the appropriate food handlers courses done - you can do the course on-line for >£50. Product and public liability Insurance for the home baking Liz does through the Farmers Market is only £70/year.

Do you want Fries with that ?

or, get a £10 camping cooker and make your own.
I prefer this option as it's more likely the marshals will be at their post after lunch rather than waiting for their double hog roast to cook ;D ;D

I have a contact with a burger van and have given him the dates above. Weekend availability is generally OK. He has asked for a rough estimation of numbers likely to judge if it would be worthwhile.?

Is this any use to you.?

Numbers-wise, its not going to be Royal Highland Show numbers, but it won't be far of a nice rural Farmers Market....
Figure on about a dozen competitors (average 3 people per "competitor") plus up to 100 marshals at the start, end, and often a lunchtime rush - some percentage of which will not have brought much food with them (I know I don't :D )

Some events will be much better, a few will be poorer.

with the pitches at the highland show they cost betwean £1000 and £2000 per pitch depend  on location and the big resturant in front of the highland hall cost £20000   just a we bit more more differant from slroc asking somebody just to come and provide hot food  with all the profit going to the food provider number wise 188000  paid admissions not including stand holders exibitors etc

Oh, absolutely.....
..... but neither of the previous people lost money doing it

(though I agree neither of them were making big buck either)

That all sounds fine. The only venue possibly not attractive is the Borders one. I'll PM you the contact name and number and you can take it from there.
Hopefully, you'll be sorted.

Michael.
