Air Con Recharge
« on: May 25, 2012, 06:40:19 PM »
Hi,

The aircon in my D2 has been struggling this week. Can anyone recommend somewhere in the Paisley area that can do a recharge of the system. There are no alarms showing, just not enough cool air.

Regards,

Alex

D2's have a common fault on the aircon in that there is a pipe that goes from the front of the grill, through a clip at the side of the passenger side headlight and the pipe corrodes/wears away in the clip. Have a look there first as if its only a small leak, you might find Quickfit can recharge your aircon and you get an immediate result, but a couple of weeks later you will be back where you started. Also remember your aircon hasn't been used all winter and the seals may have dried out/perished on some pipes.

Have you checked that the aircon compressor is running and that all associated fuses are intact?

I wouldn't be getting Kwikfit to do my aircon, "jack of all trades master of none" springs to my mind. Get an a specialist aircon company to check your system, get them to evacuate all the remaining gas and see if the system holds a vaccum, before you get it recharged, if it doesnt they can put a leak detector dye in to see where its leaking. A specialist wont charge much more than quickfit and it may also save you money in that you only get the job done once.

I wouldn't go to Kwick Fit for a re charge. There's nothing wrong with them as long as your system is working properly - which on the D2 is unlikely. They carry out a pressure test but there's not enough pressure to properly test the system for leaks. Your system will show as being OK, then after a couple of days all the gas has leaked out. As mentioned in an earlier post, your likely to have a leaking pipe on the front near side beside the horn. The pipe sits in a sponge that is wet and never dries out, and there's a steel clip securing the pipe that is located inside the sponge as well ::)

I used a man called David 07771 538 360 (Stable Air-Conditioning, Edinburgh EH28 8LU). He is a self employed Air Con Specialist based in Newbridge (he works from a van). He was excellent and very knowledgeable as all he deals with is Air Con. The local garages/dealers call on him for their Air Con Repairs.

A year ago he charged me £150 for a recharge and replacement pipe (the pipe was £60-£70 from Land Rover). I would highly recommend him :)

I live in Broxburn, which is just next to Newbridge. If David can't come to you, you would be welcome to bring your car to my house for the repair. I can supply tea/coffee :)
