Clutch change on TD5 defender 52 plate
« on: January 20, 2013, 10:05:04 PM »
As above,

Is it easier to take the engine out or gearbox off.

Probably looking at doing it in my driveway once the good weather comes in hopefully it can wait to Easter / summertime.

I think I may need to change the spigot bearing, is it easy enough to replace?

Many thanks,

John.

I did my TD5  last year plus the dual mass flywheel, i dropped the gearbox + transferbox was a pain to realign to bellhousing when reassembling. but easy enough to remove gearbox keep an eye on the viscous fan to radiator clearance as the engine tilts when geabox is dropped.

Lots, of good advice,

When I have to do the clutch and it is more likely to be the clutch, flywheel and spigot bearing change.

I will more than likely be doing it on my driveway this Easter.
Is it possible to do it on the driveway?
The landrover has the normal suspension set up.
Do u use an engine crane to support the bell housing then lower it down.

As I can't see how it will fit to remove it from underneath the landrover.

What do u guys do?

Many thanks,

John

take out the front floor and tunnel, props off gearbox cross member off and sling it from a crane thru the passenger door, you can move the gearbox back enough to do the work or drop it right out , personally i push them back, taking them out is a pain to re-sling them and line up again

I dropped and moved the gearbox back when doing flywheel and clutch . If replacing gearbox which means pulling it out. I did this on a Tdi I used two car ramps and put them diagonally ,so Landy looks cross axles to get enough clearance to get gearbox out using a borrowed pallet truck.

Cheers guys,

So the general opinion seems to be, engine crane through drivers or passengers front door to support the housing and then just move everything back.

Is the spigot bearing easy to change?

Many thanks,

I've been having a look on line and the full clutch kid including the dual mass flywheels seem to range in prices from about £350 ( Britpart) £400 valdo £500 Bermarch with OEM flywheel.

Anybody got any recommendations?

Same again for starter motors.

Many thanks,

John
