90/110 Fuse box
« on: January 11, 2013, 05:06:58 PM »
There was a thread a while back where someone was asking about the fuse box on Defenders.....Well the fuse housing for my heater has been "temperamental" for ages - OK, its knackered, burnt, melted and generally nasty. Last bodge was to jam a fuse in at a wierd angle.... Finally decided to chase up the issue, given a forecast of Arctic blasts.... . Rumour had it that Craddocks have spares despite it not having an LR part no. (To LR the fuse box is an integral part of the bulkhead loom at £ Squillions). Answer is that they dont. Put me on to Holdens. Also no go.

Latest bodge is to remove the two wires from the back of the unit, standard lucar connectors, clean up the connectors and insert an in-line fuse holder which is now rattling about in the cats cradle of wiring just behind and above the fuse box proper.

Next job then, look for a suitable blade fuse holder capable of taking 16 fuses with rear lucar connector entry that can be fitted in the space where the current item goes - or rob one off a scrapper.
If its not broken you are not trying hard enough....

Gene

Dingbro do replacement fuseboxes that hold either 4,6 or eight fuses.  They have them with either rear entry terminals or others with side entry.  I replaced the old glass type fuse boxes in the 90 I bought recently.  I dont think they do them in any larger capacities so I just used two to give me twelve fuses.

The only problem with the rear entry box is that because of the clearance needed behind them, the box is shaped like a bridge and makes the original cover almost impossible to get beck on, so for now, mine are just lying inside the cover until I get time to modify the mounting plate.

That wouldn't be a problem with the side entry boxes, but the wires are quite tight and you might have difficulty doing it.  Depending on which type you go for, they vary in price between £4 and £8 per box

Dingbro are now in Stirling if you want me to get some for you to look at unless you have access to an account

Thanks Duncan, I might have a look at the Wiring Products version - 16 fuses, rear entry so perhaps a slightly neater job.

Cheers,

G.

Halfords supply a 8 way fuse holder and you can get it cheaper if you get someone in the trade to use the trade card discount scheme , seen the holders in most stores at the diy electrical bits and bobs bit

Looks like thats the part Dave. Maybe ringing at 4pm on a Friday is not a good idea.

Here's a pic from another site.
