Auto Gearbox Leaks TD5 Discovery
« on: August 28, 2011, 11:43:41 PM »
After getting my car back on the road following the DVLA scrapping it, I've noticed a fairly bad leak between the auto box and its pump. Apparently it's a fairly common leak that happens when the bolts stretch but I'd like to get it sorted before towing the caravan too much. I'm really struggling to find someone to either fix the problem, or, take the box out for me so I can get it sorted (BH Engineering in Kinloss) and then get it put back in. Is there some reason garages are reluctant to work on a 12 year old Landrover? ;)

Tried all the usual up here in Moray, Oggs (Aberlour) etc beginning to think it might be better to travel down to one of the transmission specialists in Glasgow.

Just looking for some suggestions. thanks in advance.

Hi,

This happened to my disco td5 (1998) as well.
I bought a gasket kit from ashcroft, put the disco up on ramps (front) in my garage, and took out the gearbox.

It takes a while to remove (a few evenings), because of all the siezed bolts on crossmembers etc, you cannot use an engine crane from the inside either. I used blocks of wood and a trolley jack underneath, and 2 people.

once the gearbox and transfer box are down you can take the gearbox away from the transfer box and then start replacing the gaskets. I found the only trouble was the gasket from the pump housing to the main gearbox, inside the bellhousing the bolts in this area were not tight, so the oil pressure just pushed the gasket out.
new gasket in and tighten the bolts properly, 10 minutes, putting back in 4 hours, no special tools.

A bit footery but not impossible to do yourself.
make sure if you want to do it yourself, that you have a decent manual to follow. (especially for mounting the torque converter.)

Mackies (ZF autobox specialist) in tollcross Glasgow gave me a quote for a full recondition, 3 days, over ?1000..... :'(
That is why i did it myself... cos i is skint.... ;)

The car had been perfect ever since.
Cheers

Stephen

Thanks for the advice (and the kind offer George). Got something to think about now, it's a job I hadn't contemplated doing myself but then that how I felt about the head gasket before I did it. If I could do it it'd certainly save a lot of money. I'll give Charles Butler a call tomorrow and see what sort of cost it might be. Thanks again.

Yes that's mine. Looking forward to getting it done now, it's been one of those annoying problems that hasn't caused any running problems but arriving home to the growing collection of dark spots reminds you on a daily basis that it needs done. Thanks again for the offer of the lift but I've no option to drop off/pick the car up on Saturdays. Nice journey down tomorrow, then a slightly longer journey back up on the bus. No complaints though as the inlaws are visiting, should be home for the last hour before they need to head home.

Cheers for the suggestion Paul (and the pm). Cars booked into Charles Butler in Forfar to get the leaks sorted. I'm sometimes across on the d2 forum too but struggle to find the time.
