Electronic ignition for 13 squid
« on: November 11, 2010, 10:42:57 AM »
Anyone fitted a Britpart electronic ignition to a 2.25 engine (with Lucas dizzy)? MM4x4 are selling them for 13 squid, which seems a bit too good to be true. Do they work reliably? And is it just a case of removing the rotor arm, points and condensor and screwing the thing in, or does one have to modify the dizzy? (Since for obvious resaons I'd want to be able to revert to normal points at the roadside.)

See MM4x4 and Britpart websites.

Not massively up on these things, but I think it was one of the britpart things that got a reasonable name!

I have seen this on paddocks site as well and was wondering the same, at that price ill probably give it a try, I have seen a cheap kit on ebay being fitted and the part that goes over the cam in the dizzy was very poorly made, the 4 metal bars were visualy out when compaired to each other, this would give a different dwell angle reading on each of the cylinders, if its like that it will be going back.
Years ago I used a Luminition kit on a Fiat twincam, it was briliant.

I've got a Britpart one fitted to my Series petrol, and it certainly seems to start better and run crisper. It came with the module that replaced the points and condensor and a different rotor arm.  It is a direct replacement so I kept the points and condensor in a bag in the motor in case it failed at the road side

I'd second what dantheman said, I've got the same thing from simonbbc.com.

What a differance.

Yeh, but its 5 times the price. Would a new dizzy from paddocks at ?20 + the electronic kit be as good as the ones on ebay at ?60?

Heard and tried are two different things - I've not experienced any problems, but part of the problem is they don't come with wiring instructions and if they aren't wired correctly they don't run worth a toss

Bear in mind price -  buy cheap get cheap

There is an article in Decembers LRO int. on fitting electronic ignition to a series landy (and would be the same for petrol 90 / 110 i think)
Still to read it tho.

OK, so I'm a numpty. I bought the same kit two years ago (but had forgotten who made it), and it didn't fit my dizzy. There are two Lucas dizzies used on the S3, and mine has a pip that interferes with the kit.

Ah well, back to the drawing board!
