STRATHCLYDE 4X4 RESPONSE
« on: December 09, 2010, 02:18:04 PM »
A number of people have asked about a 4x4 emergency response organisation in the Strathclyde area. There were a couple of attempts to form in the past, but nothing came of them. Meanwhile, a British national organisation has been formed with groups established in many areas. Being part of a recognised national framework makes forming a new group more straightforward, and a new group is presently being set up in Fife.

I have been in contact with the National Organisers who have agreed to the formation of a new group in Strathclyde. I am willing to act as a contact to gather details of those who are interested, so that a meeting can be organised to formally meet, adopt a constitution, appoint officials, etc so that a group comes into existence. It is then up to the group how to progress.

The concept of these groups is that they are not restricted to any make or type of vehicle ? all sorts of 4x4s are needed as the duties they are called out for are very varied. You can see details on their website at http://www.4x4response.info/

If you are interested, please make contact by emailing Strathclyde4x4Response@hotmail.co.uk or if you want to ask any questions. Also, please distribute this information as widely as possible by posting on other off-road forums, or pass it on to any 4x4 owner you know who isn?t a forum member.

Alasdair, there are many ways in which you (and others) can help without having a 4x4 vehicle.

There are many instances where a crew of two will be required, contact (usually by radio or cellphone) has to be maintained with a central point, and if everybody is out and about in vehicles, who is there to take the next call? Not to mention the admin side of things, fundraising, quartermaster duties, welfare, etc.

Some ways you look at the operational scenarios, you need far more people than vehicles!!

Arrangements have now been made for an inaugural meeting of Strathclyde 4x4 Response to be held on Wednesday 2nd February at 7:00pm at:-

The Goodwillie Room
Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Headquarters
Bothwell Road
HAMILTON
Lanarkshire
ML3 0EA

The meeting is scheduled to start at 7:00pm and SF&R are kindly providing light refreshments from 6:30pm. I know some of you will not be able to arrive until after 7:00pm, so arrangements will be made to provide seats close to the door for late arrivals.

More details and an agenda for the meeting will be available soon. This is an open public meeting so please pass on details to other 4x4 owners that you know may be interested.

Regards, Stuart

Remember that the inaugural meeting of Strathclyde 4x4 Response is to be held this Wednesday 2nd February at 7:00pm at Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Headquarters, Bothwell Road, HAMILTON, ML3 0EA.

Many people have heard about this through various forums, and I?d like to thank the forum administrators for helping to publicise the formation of the group, and also the individual forum members who have copied the information onto further forums. We have been able to send additional information to those folk who contacted our e-mail address, but everyone is welcome to attend the meeting on Wednesday; and to bring along with them anyone else who is interested in the aims of the new group. In fact, you don?t even need to have a 4x4 vehicle.

There will be four speakers who together will build up a brief picture of how our new response group will work with the emergency services, and they should be able to answer any of the questions that you may have.

?How Emergency Response is Organised Nationally?
Stewart Borthwick - Regional Resilience Advisor - Strathclyde Emergencies Co-ordination Group

?The Volunteer Contribution?
Peter McCarthy - Operations Director, British Red Cross - West Central & South West Scotland

?Local Implementation?
Kenny Wratten - Health, Safety and Contingency Planning Unit - South Lanarkshire Council

?How the NATIONAL 4x4 RESPONSE works?
Simon Bentley ? Chairman National 4x4 Response - Yorkshire & Lincolnshire 4x4 Response

After a short break we will have the formal part of the meeting where the group will actually be formed. The speakers start at 7:00pm but if you will not be able to arrive until after that time seats will be available close to the door.

There is ample parking in front of the buildings on both sides of the site, and additional spaces by following the internal road round to the left. The doors leading to the Goodwillie Room are to the right of the main building, beneath a large SFR sign, but are not visible from the main road. Please remember that part of this site is a busy operational Fire Station.

Thanks are due to Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and especially Fire Officer Ian Clark for hosting this meeting.

Regards, Stuart
