5 SPEED GEAR BOX
« on: March 23, 2015, 11:35:00 AM »
Hello fellow members. I have a land rover series 3 county SWB. quite a few years ago a previous owner replaced the engine with a 2.5 diesel engine from what I think was a Defender
Does anyone know of any reason why I cannot put in a 5 speed gear box?. My landy seems to be looking for a 5th gear at 35 to 40 mph, that is about its top speed. I think a 5th gear would allow it to go a bit faster and may be use less fuel
I am busy at the moment replacing the rear floor pan, one of many jobs needing done to make it presentable
Happy motoring - martyn

A defender five speed will fit with a few mods, but it runs in permanent four wheel drive
Your series three front axle is not strong enough to cope with that for long, so bear that in mind

run a series landie and take your time

what about an overdrive option ?

roamerdrive ?
`87 ninety - full rebuild with 11l 200tdi conversion ,2 inch lift and 13 inch shocks and relevent protection/sliders./ dislocation cones

Goes like a stabbed rat.

Overdrive and or coiler diffs are easier than a 5speed. You can do it but it is not particularly cheap or straightforward, different options with the series transfer box or fitting the LT230.

Thank you all for the very useful replies
Would fitting an overdrive improve the speed at all
or would fitting the LT230 be better and make a difference

I am getting on quite well with my landy at the moment, all new floors and repaired seat box all back in place
Sound proofing has been ordered, that should make for a quieter drive

Also thinking of replacing leaf springs as the ones on my landy is like driving on a solid iron bar. Thinking of the 2 leaf parabolic springs, any comments please

Happy motoring to all

leaf springs - if not blown or bent  :o
strip them down , wire brush them clean and rebuild them with plenty of oil
much better and cheaper than para bollox  ;)

The standard Fairey overdrive is the simplest solution - you can fit one in a couple of hours without removing the gearbox or even the seatbox if you're feeling really idle - and you get an extra gearstick! Imagine!
However, beware. A good, quiet one is like gold dust. They double the number of ratios in your box, but they can leak and get very hot on long runs.
I wouldn't want to be without one, but I have been very seriously contemplating going down the Ashcroft route (see vag_landy's link above).
There is so much less to go wrong.
Hope this helps.
