whats this for ?
« on: November 02, 2010, 05:03:30 PM »
Hi All

Rebuilding the front end of the  90 today  1993 200tdi orig  engine.

It came with the inner wing in the back tub ( someone was going to do the foot wells but they never got done)

On cleaning the inner wing i found what looks like a large metal cased resistor bolted on  the wing" N/S "with two wires going to a plug,
The wires have rotted of at one end and it will have to be replaced..

Haveing left the manual in the workshopdoes, and haveing never came across this before does anyone know what its for.
Thanks
Greig

Hi
will try for a pic in the morning
Its about 2  1/2inch long gold in colour and about 1/2 inch dia  convinced its a power resistor . but i cant see a need for it .

Going out tonight or i would try to see if there was a plug lurking under the  wing  which it mates to.

i think you remove this if you have fitted headlamps with bulbs instead of the older sealed beams might be wrong though :-\

I found one on my '96 during the rebuild and thought it was part of the extra driving lights the PO had added - so I deleted it. I was not wired up anyway.
No issues, all lights working fine. ( Bulbs, not sealed beams) .

If its not broken you are not trying hard enough....

Hi
Thanks for the replys
Went into gem today to try and get one. unfortunatlly they could not find the one they had in stock (thanks for looking anyway ).
After a discussion  i found out it drops the voltage to 6 volts for the headlights when running with the side lights on only.
Apparentlly it makes no diffrence if its not connected only the headlights wont  work on dim with only the side lights on.
From this i take it the side light and head lights will work like normal  if its disconnected.
Any way wings, doors and floors back in tonight  will do the wireing over the next couple of days and wiil let you know the outcome.
