Defrosting
« on: October 31, 2010, 10:17:58 AM »
Hi,

I'm looking for ways to defrost the disco in the winter mornings. I go to work at 6am, leaving the disco running for 20 mins at that time is a pain. I'd be lucky if it starts to warm up that quick.
I've put a post in the for sale section looking for a Kenlowe pre heater.
I've heard of people using greenhouse heaters etc.
What do you do.

Go to work later isn't an option ;D ;D

cheers

Geoff

I have fallen back on the basics. A decent scraper(very hard to find these days) cans of spray de-icer and undiluted screen wash.
I start the engine and run it while I do the scraping. Still takes 5-10 mins
A pre-heater does some great, but prohibitively expensive.
Gonnae no dae that

I've used a 1ft greenhouse tubular heater mounted on a board that sits on the floor in front of the back seats for a number of years and although it doesn't stop the iced up windows completely, the ice comes off the windows with a quick wipe. As they are low power (think the one I've got is 40W) I use a mains extention cable off a timer carefully placed through the rear door.

Halfords Night Before De-icer, has been on my shopping list for around 5 years now,
3 for the price of 2 offers usually.

You will see which temps & types of frost it works best with, to save wasting it,
Just spray on the outside of the glass when you park up.
basically it stops the Ice/Frost sticking to the Glass.

It keeps your wiper blades soft & doesnt smear badly.

I little carton on salt with cling film over it & a few holes to reduce moisture in the vehicle,
one in the car & one in the boot.
works for me, even of others dont believe in it..
(Or Gell Silca if you want the real stuff)

Tescos have just started stocking 'Window Cleaner with Rain X included' in a spray container. ?5.87
Maybe less wasteful than applying Rain X with a cloth.
But Possibly not worth using if you are going to use night before De-icer.

'Fog X' used inside the glass is worth its weight in gold i think.

2 minute defrost this morning. ;)

Got the B&Q Greenhouse fan heater & extension cable ready for later this week.
(i set it at to come on at 3 degrees celcius)
