Title: Islay 2018 - ferry timetable released - please book your own tickets
Post by: stanlee on November 05, 2017, 04:06:33 PM
In the 'Dates for your diary' pages in the last club magazine, you may have seen that we are planning a camping/whisky/driving trip to Islay on 4th to 7th May 2018. The ferry timetable has now been released and tickets can be purchased via Calmac.

It is entirely up to you to decide when you wish to arrive and depart but in case it's helpful, these are the sailings which I have booked:
Friday 4th May - Kennacraig to Port Askaig at 13:00
Monday 7th May - Port Ellen to Kennacraig at 12:45

Please note we are not organising an official convoy to drive round to Kennacraig. It would however be a bit of a coincidence if a few Land Rovers just happened to be leaving Loch Lomond Shores at Balloch at around 09:00 on the Friday.

The next update will relate to camping options.

That's me and SWMBO booked on the same crossings.  My brother (South Ayrshire Branch) is also booked on.  Anyone know a sympathetic farmer on Islay that can give us an enclosed field (near a foody pub etc)? Or, does anyone have any firm camping plans already?  We, personally, don't mind wild camping for the duration and we'll be taking our two mutts along.  Definitely planning to head off from Balloch.

Hi there - great to see that folk are getting organised for this trip.

At the moment, it's looking likely that we'll use the Port Mor campsite near Port Charlotte, as we are discussing some discounted rates with them. Staying there is obviously not necessary if people want to do their own thing, including wild camping.

We'll be setting up a discount code with the campsite so that we all get the better rates when we book, this just hasn't been done quite yet. As for staying in a farmer's field, we are unlikely to be going down that route because several people have expressed their preference for having proper campsite facilities.

Cheers - Dave

Yup.  Stayed there a few years ago.  Nice clean site and not far from the village.  It has a large tent field and several hook up pitches, in the touring part, on the edge of Loch Indaal
