A posts ..
« on: February 13, 2013, 07:30:31 AM »
Hi guys,

At some point I will require to renew the A posts( if that's what they are called ) on my 90, both have quite a bit of rot in them although door operation not affected yet and I don't think it's an mot failure ????

Anyway bearing in mind that my 90 is not of showroom condition and I would not need any paintwork done( would do it myself), can anyone give me a rough idea of cost of replacing both these parts( the narrow strip where the door hinges attach to )

Just a rough idea , problem is I would probably be better fitting two new doors also as both are rusty along bottoms .

Cheers

Donald

you mean on the bulk head ?

both mine passed mot with bits of duct tape over them to cover sharp exposed edges.

have since replaced them - the weld in parts were about 15-20 quid each side. hardest part about doing it was getting the crusty wing retaining bolts out.

If you dont have a welder - find a landy specialist used to doing it as the average garage welding is worse than mine ime - the welds on the sills of my frontera are scary snotty - infact id be surprised if it wasnt stick welded by stevie wonder.

hi donald

the posts on the bulkhead are called door posts , if they have quite a bit of rot on them then chances are the bottom bulkhead mounts are on there way out also . you should also check the footwells if these are holed then this is the time to change them too [all the repair panels are avalible ] best to do it all at once . it is a straight forward job if you can weld and fabricate steel , if you have not done any of this work before then it might be a bit big for your first time as you can get it wrong  :o.
as for how much it would cost that depends on what you find when you start taking it apart.

hope this helps shug...

yep the more i cut back the more i found needing done. - mostly just patched the rest(top corners and bottom corners of footwells) though.

i think if i was doing it again id be saving up and going to ashtree for a galvy unit.

Cheers guys ,

That's a great help, first thing I need to do is have a really good look at the base of the door posts and floor, I'm not a welder but know plenty of guys that can, it's not urgent unless it affects the mot!!

Will keep you updated,

thanks

A-posts are a pretty straightforward job for a welder who knows their Landies.
It would make sense to replace the footwells at the same time.
Be sure to get quality replacement parts. There are some dreadful efforts on eBay or in the wretched blue box - I can heartily recommend http://www.yrmlandrover.com/ - as will probably everyone else.
If you need a welder, then Shug - of this very forum - is a true artist.
Hope this helps
Kathy
